Should I Remove The Governor?
By allowing the engine to rev higher, removing the governor unleashes more power. But this should be done in conjunction with (at least) a less restrictive air filter and exhaust, or not much will be gained.
Changing the carburetor jet and installing heavier valve springs are the next steps for even more performance.

Use Proper Oil
Check your engine manufacturer's suggestions; most small engines require oil specifically designed for air-cooled equipment. Most automotive oils manufactured after 2009 do not meet these specifications. This results in higher operating temperatures and reduced engine life.
Change oil at recommended intervals (or once a year minimum).
