Are Briggs Intek Motors Any Good?

I've heard stories from commercial landscapers complaining that Intek engines won't hold up under heavy commercial use. This is not what they were intended for. For heavy commercial use, there is the Briggs Vanguard series.

The Intek engine was designed for homeowner mowing needs, best suited for yards that are moderately flat with less than two acres of grass. When used as intended, they'll give years of good service.

Intek Engine Models (Single Cylinder)

There are two engine displacements in the Intek single-cylinder engine series. Both are air cooled, 4-stroke engines with overhead valves.

The physical dimensions are the same for both motors, so if you're looking to do a lawn tractor motor swap, you can interchange one for the other.

Intek Powered John Deere

Our old John Deere LA110 lawn tractor was powered by a 19.5hp Intek engine. It served us well for eight seasons - started easily and never leaked, although it did get noisier through the years.

After 13 seasons, we replaced the Deere due to rust and rot on the deck and body. The only engine issues we had with it was due to bad gas.

There is one engine displacement on the Intek two-cylinder engine.

Oil Capacity

Oil capacity for Intek engines is 1.5 quarts, which is equivalent to 1.4 litres. For your convenience, Briggs sells oil in a 48 ounce oil container, which is 1.5 quarts.

Best Oil Filter

Briggs oil filter 492932s is recommended and always a good choice, but any major name brand filter will do, such as Napa or Wix.

Oil Change Interval

Recommended oil and filter replacement on Briggs Intek engines is every 50/100/150/200/250 hours.

Briggs Intek Oil Type

Most B&S small engines, including the Intek, require oil specifically designed for air-cooled equipment. Most automotive oils manufactured after 2009 do not meet these specifications. Using these results in higher operating temperatures and reduced engine life.

Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 30W or 10W30.

Spark Plug and Gap

Recommended spark plug replacement is a Champion RC12YC or equivalent.

Spark plug gap is .030 inches.

Air Filter

There are two styles of flat panel air filters seen on Briggs Intek engines. They'll usually be outer pre-filter too, which helps extend engine life.

One style of air filter has a handle on the shorter side. The other style has a handle on the bigger side.

Fuel Filter

Like most lawn tractors, there is a 1/4" fuel filter in-line between the gas tank and carburetor. From the factory, it is held on with 'spring' clamps. Quite often, these get replaced with automotive-style 'worm' clamps. Either style works fine.

Briggs Plastic Intake

Designed to save cost and weight, Briggs introduced a polymer (plastic) intake manifold on the Intek engine about 1993. During normal homeowner (non-commercial) use, it should last as long as the rest of the engine.

Briggs AVS

In 2001, Briggs introduced the AVS anti-vibration system, which was designed to help eliminate side-to-side engine motion. With reduced vibration, there's less wear and tear on the engine, the equipment, and the rider.

Briggs Intek Engine Replacement

If you're faced with a choice of buying a new mower or a new engine, a new replacement Intek engine will be about 1/3 the cost of a new mower. An entire engine replacement can be purchased through several online companies, including Amazon.
